What Happens During Bronchoscopy?

A step-by-step guide to flexible bronchoscopy — from preparation to recovery — so you know exactly what to expect.

Flexible bronchoscopy allows your pulmonologist to look inside your airways with a thin, flexible camera and, if needed, collect samples. It is usually a day-care procedure.

Before the procedure

  • Fast for about 6 hours
  • Tell the team about blood thinners, diabetes medicines and allergies
  • Arrange for someone to accompany you home

During the procedure

  • Your nose and throat are numbed with a local anaesthetic spray
  • Light sedation helps you relax
  • Oxygen and vital signs are monitored throughout
  • The bronchoscope is passed gently through the nose or mouth; you can breathe normally around it
  • Samples such as washings or biopsies may be taken

After the procedure

You will rest until the sedation wears off. Do not eat or drink until the numbness settles (about 1–2 hours). A mild sore throat or cough is common. Do not drive for the rest of the day.
